One billion cubic meters of gas are saved per year as the third steam unit of Urmia combined-cycle power plant was launched and connected to Iran’s national power grid.
Having 1500 megawatt capacity, Urmia combined-cycle power plant was built in a 110-hectare land and consists of six gas units and three steam units, Alireza Sadrabadi, Managing Director of Tadbir Sazan Saramad Pasargad Company was quoted as saying by Pasargad Energy Development Company.
After Pasargad Energy Development Company and Tadbir Sazan Saramad Pasargad Company bought Urmia power plant at an auction in the Iranian year 1390 (started March 21, 2011), conversion of the gas power plant to a combined-cycle one put on the agenda in order to upgrade its efficacy and save fuel consumption, he added.
The development project of the three steam units of Urmia combined-cycle power plant started in the Iranian year 1397 (started March 21, 2018) and was accelerated following opening a letter of credit in fall 2018. Meanwhile, After the successful synchronization of the first and second steam units in 2020 and 2021, synchronization of the third unit and finalizing three combined-cycle blocks were put on the agenda, he stated.
Nominal production capacity of Urmia power plant was increased to 1500 megawatts as the third steam unit of the power plant, with a capacity of 160 megawatts, was launched, he said.
Following the launching of the third steam unit, one billion cubic meters are saved in fuel consumption, which is over 16 percent of West Azerbajian Province’s fuel consumption, Sadrabadi added.
Urmian combined-cycle power plant including six gas units and three steam units and 1500 megawatt capacity, is one of the biggest and most modern power generation plants in western Iran, he said, adding, “about 400 million euros was invested in the steam units of the power plant, 385 million euros of which were supplied by the credits of National Development Fund through the Bank of Industry and Mine.
