Successful Completion of EPD Project for Evaluation Well No. 3 in Ghezel Tappeh

Friday، 09 May 2025

The drilling of Evaluation Well No. 3 in Ghezel Tappeh, which faced significant complexities due to extreme temperature and pressure conditions at great depths, has been successfully completed.

This project was undertaken under HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) conditions, with bottom-hole temperatures reaching 350 degrees Fahrenheit and pressures of 15,700 psi. The Engineering and Development of Gas Company of Iran assigned the project to Pejvak Energy, a subsidiary of the Pasargad Energy Group, and subsequently, the project employer transitioned to the Exploration Department of the National Iranian Oil Company.

During this project, various operations were conducted, including repair, deepening, drilling, well testing, and suspending the well. The drilling process reached a depth of 5,050 meters using a water-oil base fluid, with coring performed in the Tyrgan and Shorijeh formations.

The two previous wells in this field were drilled in 1967 and 1969 by the National Iranian Oil Exploration Company with the assistance of foreign contractors. The drilling of Well No. 3 had previously been initiated by another company but was halted at a depth of 2,500 meters due to a lack of technical and operational readiness to handle the specific temperature and pressure conditions of this field.

To successfully execute this project, Pejvak Energy employed multiple innovations and creative solutions across various sectors—achievements that can be utilized in future projects across the country. Key advancements included:
1. Designing and simulating various operations and preparing for well control.
2. Drilling while adhering to safety principles at temperatures exceeding 340 degrees and controlling the properties of drilling fluid with a weight of 138 ppg.
3. Designing and executing quality cementing operations with a 7-inch liner.
4. Optimizing the placement of the 7-inch centralizer with asymmetric spacing to improve cement quality.
5. Conducting logging operations at bottom-hole temperatures above 340 degrees Fahrenheit.
6. Conducting fracturing and well-testing in high temperature and pressure conditions.
7. Simulating heat transfer and temperature variations to design and optimize the operations considering the temperature fluctuations at the well's bottom.

The successful completion of this project demonstrates the capabilities and expertise of the technical and engineering team at Pejvak Energy in overcoming complex challenges in harsh drilling conditions. This accomplishment was achieved while adhering to all safety and operational standards, ensuring the highest quality throughout the project.
